Edit Metadata

UNC Dataverse sets new dataset records as a draft by default. This permits users to make further customizations to the record and review the contents before publishing and registering the persistent identifier (DOI).

When you create your dataset, you are only able to see a limited range of the metadata fields offered through the Dataverse platform. Editing your metadata will offer you an expanded view of all available metadata fields where you can further describe your research data and supplementary materials.

Before you publish your record, you will want to do a thorough review of the metadata. First, read through the dataset record to make sure all formatting and existing content is accurate and describes the context of your research data. If you see any errors or want to add more information, click ‘Edit Dataset’ in the upper right side of the dataset record page and choose ‘Metadata’ from the drop-down menu. You will be redirected to an expanded metadata record where you can edit and add more information about your dataset.

Alternatively, you can also select ‘Edit Files’ from the file list section of your dataset record. Choose ‘Metadata’ from the drop-down to be redirected to the expanded metadata page.

The extended metadata page will look very similar to the ‘New Dataset’ page where you created your draft dataset record; however, if you scroll further down you will now see more metadata fields and options for describing your data and research.

Make any edits and fill in any new metadata fields as needed. Keep in mind that the more information you provide, the easier it will be for users to find and understand your research and the contents of your dataset record.

When you have completed your review and edits, scroll to the very bottom of the page, and click ‘Save Changes’. You will be taken back to the draft dataset record.
