dbGaP

This article introduces dbGaP and highlights policies, requirements, and guidelines for depositing and sharing data within dbGaP.

Introduction

The National Library of Medicine’s National Center for Biotechnology Information manages and maintains the database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP) with the primary goal of preserving and sharing data from genotype and phenotype human subjects research. Supported by the National Institutes of Health, dbGaP is a designated repository for many NIH institutes and centers.

All NIH funded human genomic research must be registered in dbGaP to comply with their Genomic Data Sharing Policy.

Database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP)

dbGaP is first and foremost a registry for human genomic studies funded through NIH and its institutes and centers. In addition, dbGaP provides controlled access to genomic data through a comprehensive access request process outlined on their site. They also collect and make accessible genomic data from NIH-funded studies via the dbGaP platform. Submissions to dbGaP must conform to their requirements which are documented in their guidance linked below.

Questions about dbGaP Submissions

For UNC researchers in the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Lineberger Bioinformatics Core offers a Data Sharing service to support submissions to dbGaP.
