Edit Metadata

UNC Dataverse sets new dataset records as a draft by default. This permits users to make further customizations to the record and review the contents before publishing and registering the persistent identifier (DOI).

When you create your dataset, you are only able to see a limited range of the metadata fields offered through the Dataverse platform. Editing your metadata will offer you an expanded view of all available metadata fields where you can further describe your research data and supplementary materials.

Before you publish your record, you will want to do a thorough review of the metadata. First, read through the dataset record to make sure all formatting and existing content is accurate and describes the context of your research data. If you see any errors or want to add more information, click ‘Edit Dataset’ in the upper right side of the dataset record page and choose ‘Metadata’ from the drop-down menu. You will be redirected to an expanded metadata record where you can edit and add more information about your dataset.

Alternatively, you can also select ‘Edit Files’ from the file list section of your dataset record. Choose ‘Metadata’ from the drop-down to be redirected to the expanded metadata page.

The extended metadata page will look very similar to the ‘New Dataset’ page where you created your draft dataset record; however, if you scroll further down you will now see more metadata fields and options for describing your data and research.

Make any edits and fill in any new metadata fields as needed. Keep in mind that the more information you provide, the easier it will be for users to find and understand your research and the contents of your dataset record.

When you have completed your review and edits, scroll to the very bottom of the page, and click ‘Save Changes’. You will be taken back to the draft dataset record.

Edit Files

While reviewing your draft dataset record, you may notice missing files or erroneously shared files. Don’t worry, you can edit your files within the draft dataset before publishing it.

If you forgot to include a file(s) and need to upload more, click on ‘Edit Dataset’ in the upper right of the dataset record and select ‘Files (Upload)’ from the drop-down.

You will be redirected to the file upload manager where you can select or drag-and-drop your files into the uploader. Once UNC Dataverse has finished uploading the files you can add file-level metadata as needed. Click ‘Save Changes’ when you have finished adding files.

If you need to delete a file, scroll down to the Files tab of the draft dataset record. Click the checkbox beside each file(s) you wish to delete. Select ‘Edit Files’ on the far right and choose ‘Delete’.

Note: You may also use this method to edit individual file-level metadata and tags as needed.

Edit Terms of Use

UNC Dataverse designates all published datasets records with a CC0 license by default; however, users can easily customize the Terms of Use for each dataset record in the platform.

If you need to update the terms of use, select a different creative commons license, or provide additional usage requirements for your dataset record, please scroll to the bottom of your draft dataset record, and click on the ‘Terms’ tab. On the right side of this section, select ‘Edit Terms of Use’.

You will be redirected to the Edit Terms of Use page where you may remove the CC0 default public domain license. You will then be able to include your own custom terms of use.

Additional information and conditions for re-use of your data may be included in the metadata fields on the terms of use page. If your data are restricted, please include access request instructions and information in the section labeled ‘Restricted Files + Terms of Access’.

You may also enable or disable your guestbook on the Edit Terms of Use page. See our guide for more information on guestbooks.

When you have finished updating the terms of use, scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘Save Changes’. Your draft will be updated with the new terms.
